The Counselling Team at Queen West offers a variety of ongoing mental health wellness programs. They are offered at various times throughout the year, depending on needs of clients of the Centre.
Skills for Safer Living is a 10 week closed group to support clients who have tried to take their own lives in the past OR who think often about taking their lives OR have tried to harm themselves in the past and for all of these reasons may have end up often visiting the hospital emergency room. It is offered onsite at Queen West and runs on a yearly basis. The group is 90 minutes long and is led by 2 staff members of the counselling team and 2 peer facilitators who have already completed the group. The group accepts up to 12 participants. Each participant is asked to continue to meet with their primary counsellor while attending the group as there are several activities clients will be encouraged to complete with their counsellor outside of the group. Healthy snacks are served at each group.
The purpose of the group is to find a sense of hope again, to provide emotional support and to ease self-destructive behaviours through teaching skills in crisis de-escalation, understanding of emotions and problem solving.
Registration for this group requires a referral by a Queen West staff and the process includes a meeting with the group facilitator/counsellor. A peer facilitator and counsellor will determine if the client is ready to attend such a group, and to see if the group is a good fit for the client.
The idea for this group is based on a suicide intervention group that runs at St. Michael’s Hospital. Contact a Counsellor if you would like information about the group at (416) 703-8482 ext. 209.
No Feeling is Final is a 9 week psycho-educational group that uses methods from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist clients in learning new methods to help them to cope with overwhelming feelings. This is a skill development group, is 2 hours long and is led by 2 counsellors. Currently the program runs on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4 p.m and is usually offered twice a year depending on client needs.
The purpose of the group is to reduce worries, relieve anxieties and reduce feelings of depression.
Clients in the community can refer themselves or be referred by a healthcare provider. Contact a counsellor at (416) 703-8482 at ext. 314 or at ext. 326 if interested in making a referral. Both counsellors will meet with interested individuals before the group starts to make sure the group is a good fit.
A Mindful Approach to Wellness is a 10 week stress reduction group that is geared towards Queen West clients who are motivated to improving their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being through a variety of methods such as mindfulness meditation and movement. The group runs 3 times a year and is facilitated by a health promoter and a counsellor. The group accepts up to 12 participants. Yoga mats and meditation cushions are provided for use during the program.
The purpose of the group is to increase awareness of the effects of stress on our thoughts, bodies and emotions, to learn different ways of being calm, and to feel more safe and stable in the present moment.
Referrals can be made by either a provider or can be a self-referral. Contact a counsellor at (416) 703-8482 at ext. 325 or a health promoter at ext. 234 if interested in making a referral. Both staff will meet with interested individuals before the group starts to make sure the group is a good fit.
*Please note: the groups noted above are not the only ones we intend to offer.
